Goto Islands Unwind

Goto Islands (五島列島) are off the western coast of Kyushu in Southern Japan. Historically, its known as the refuge for Hidden Christians ( 隠れキリシタン) after Christianity was banned from Japan in 1614. The ban was lifted in 1873 and the Christians who had practiced their faith in secret built Churches across the islands. The tragic story of the Hidden Christians is depicted in Martin Scorsese’s movie Silence with Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield.

To reach the Goto Islands, we took a jetfoil from Nagasaki to the main island of Fukue. The ride is about 2 hours. We spent our time there exploring the islands with a small EV rental. We were able to charge overnight at our hotel – the Goto Retreat ray was wonderful.

  1. So peaceful, just to look at the photos; it must have been even more so to experience. I love the first and last images, especially.
