From Santiago, we took a day trip to Valpariso. Before coming to Chile, I had never heard of Valpariso but its a gem. Unlike the polished Santiago, central Valpariso is grittier and a bit of a shock to the system. The historic quarter of Valpariso is a colorful hillside neighborhood that overlooks the Pacific.

From our hotel in the Lastarria area of Santiago, we took the subway to the bus depot. Its a 2 hour bus ride to Valpariso. After reaching Valpariso, you can take the trolleybus to the historic quarters or walk. We took to trolleybus but walked back.
