Old vs. New in Kyoto

Interesting NY Times article about how Kyoto and Japan in general is attempting to attract tourists.  Currently Ukraine gets more tourists than Japan, but I concur with Alex Kerr in this article – they are approaching it the wrong way.  Building a mammoth aquarium complex in Kyoto isn’t going to do the trick – they need to put more effort on preservation and restoration.  No one goes to visit new Paris but the historical district.  Same with Kyoto.
